The fight of people living with disabilities for their full integration and their rightful place in society is a crucial issue that requires collective awareness. The legal representative of the Association for the Social Integration of the Physically Disabled (AISHP) North Kivu, Hortense Kavuo Maliro, recently stressed the importance for each individual with a disability to take charge of their destiny.

The inclusion of people living with disabilities is not limited to a simple recognition of their existence, but implies active participation at all levels of society. Hortense Kavuo insisted on the need for these individuals to be involved in the management and control of national affairs, in order to guarantee fair representation and fair treatment for all.

It is essential to recognize that people living with disabilities are an asset to society and that they deserve to have the opportunity to express their potential and talents. Unfortunately, many persons with disabilities still face precarious living conditions, including those who have been forced to flee their homes and live in displacement camps.

On the occasion of the International Day of Persons Living with Disabilities, it is essential to reaffirm the commitment to the inclusion and empowerment of these individuals. This year’s theme, “Amplifying the leadership of persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future”, highlights the importance of supporting and valuing the initiatives taken by persons with disabilities to improve their own situation and contribute positively to society.

There is an urgent need to create an environment conducive to the development and autonomy of persons with disabilities, by putting in place policies and programmes that promote their active participation and full social integration. It is by recognising and valuing the diversity of all individuals, whatever their abilities, that we can build together a more just, inclusive and sustainable society.

In this perspective, it is essential to promote a culture of respect, solidarity and mutual aid, which will allow everyone to find their place and contribute to building a better future for all. People living with disabilities have a key role to play in this approach, as drivers of change and key players in building a fairer and more inclusive society for all.
