Fatshimetrie – Military bases bequeathed to the army in the DRC after the disengagement of MONUSCO
The transition of control of military bases from MONUSCO to the Armed Forces of the DRC (FARDC) in the province of South Kivu marks a significant step for the country. General Jacques Ilunga, Deputy Commander of the 33rd Military Region, stressed the importance of properly maintaining and using these strategic sites bequeathed by the UN mission. This statement was made during a four-day assessment mission in Bukavu, during which various actors inspected the military bases previously occupied by foreign contingents.
Government delegates and UN agencies visited three main bases, formerly used by Uruguayan, Pakistani and Chinese contingents in Kavumu and Amsar. The observation is clear: nothing has been lost, everything is well preserved. General Jacques Ilunga expressed his confidence in the ability of the FARDC to maintain this infrastructure and equipment. He stressed the importance of continued support to ensure their proper use and long-term preservation.
Noel Mbemba, General Delegate of the Government in charge of the Technical Secretariat for the Disengagement of MONUSCO, welcomed the management of the military bases by the FARDC. He commended the professionalism of the military and the way in which they have been able to preserve the equipment and infrastructure bequeathed. He stressed that these bases are not abandoned, but are fully operational and well maintained.
This joint mission, which will continue until December 7, demonstrates the importance of this transfer of responsibilities. The ability of the FARDC to ensure the security and management of military bases is a crucial step towards national autonomy and sovereignty. It also demonstrates the confidence of international partners in the capacities of the Congolese armed forces to ensure stability and security in the region.
The process of disengagement of MONUSCO and the transfer of its responsibilities to local authorities are essential steps in building a strong and resilient Congo. By keeping in mind the importance of preserving these military bases and ensuring their effective use, the FARDC contributes to strengthening the country’s sovereignty and ensuring its long-term security.
