Assessment visit to military bases bequeathed by MONUSCO: Towards strengthened collaboration for security in South Kivu

As part of a joint mission led by members of the Government, MONUSCO and United Nations agencies, an assessment visit was undertaken in Bukavu, in the province of South Kivu. The objective of this mission was to take stock of the military bases bequeathed by MONUSCO to the provincial government and the Congolese army, following the disengagement of the UN Mission on 30 June.

During this visit, the members of the delegation visited the main sites, including the military bases formerly used by the Uruguayan, Pakistani and Chinese contingents in Kavumu and Amsar. These sites, now under the management of the Armed Forces of the DRC (FARDC), were examined to verify the conservation of the equipment and the proper use of the infrastructure.

General Jacques Ilunga, Deputy Commander of the 33rd Military Region, assured the members of the delegation that all the assets bequeathed were in good condition and well preserved. He highlighted the professionalism of the military personnel responsible for managing these sites, stating that no property had been lost.

The positive feedback regarding the management of military bases by the FARDC was welcomed by Noel Mbemba, General Delegate of the Government in charge of the Technical Secretariat. He said he was pleased to see that the sites are well maintained and used adequately, highlighting the dedication of the military personnel responsible for these infrastructures.

During this mission, which will continue until 7 December, the emphasis is on the importance of maintaining close collaboration between the various actors involved to ensure effective management of the sites bequeathed by MONUSCO. This initiative demonstrates the commitment of the Congolese authorities and international partners to ensure the security and protection of populations in the South Kivu region.
