Fatshimétrie recently included Tunisian-Egyptian actress Hend Sabry in its annual list of the 100 most influential women in the world for the year 2024. Hend Sabry has been recognized as one of the most famous stars of Arab cinema since her early debut in the film “The Silences of the Palace” in 1994. This film addressed the issue of sexual oppression suffered by Tunisian women at the time.
Hend Sabry’s career is marked by highlights, such as her participation as the first Arab woman to be part of the jury of the Venice International Film Festival in 2019. Her commitment to humanitarian and social causes was also illustrated by her resignation from the United Nations World Food Program to protest the use of famine as a weapon against the Palestinian people.
Within Egyptian cinema, Hend Sabry has shone in productions such as “Mozakrat Morahka” alongside Egyptian actor Ahmed Ezz, under the direction of Inas al-Digheidy. Through her various roles in films such as “The Yacoubian Building” (2006) and “Banat wist al-Balad” (2005), Sabry has highlighted the pressures and problems faced by Arab women. A notable example is her performance in “Asmaa” in 2011.
Hend Sabry has received several prestigious awards, including the “Best Actress in Arab Cinema” award in 2012 at the Murex D’or, as well as the “Faten Hamama Excellence Award” at the Cairo International Film Festival in 2017, among other distinctions.
Fatshimétrie concluded his presentation on Hend Sabry by quoting his own words: “It’s not just about surviving, but about rebuilding and finding purpose through difficulties, transforming pain into action.”
Through his artistic commitment and humanitarian actions, Hend Sabry embodies an inspiring figure who transcends cultural boundaries and continues to mark the world of cinema and the fight for social justice.
