On the night of Sunday to Monday, December 2, horror struck again in the territory of Beni, located in the North Kivu region of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Fifteen people tragically lost their lives in a brutal attack allegedly perpetrated by ADF rebels. Local residents witnessed scenes of terror as attackers sowed death and destruction in their wake.
Local authorities report a provisional toll, raising fears that the number of victims may actually be higher. Indeed, several people are missing following this barbaric attack. Two houses were burned after being looted, leaving behind a landscape of desolation and ruins.
Faced with this tragedy, the local population was deeply upset, forced to flee to escape the violence and insecurity that reign in the region. However, hope was born from the intervention of the soldiers of the joint FARDC-UPDF forces, whose courage and determination prevented an even more catastrophic toll.
This new escalation of violence once again raises the question of security and the protection of civilians in the Beni region. Local and international authorities must redouble their efforts to put an end to these atrocities and to guarantee the safety of the innocent populations who are targeted by these armed groups.
It is crucial that light be shed on these attacks and that those responsible be brought to justice to answer for their heinous acts. The people of Beni deserve to be able to live in peace and security in their own country, far from the terror and violence that threaten them daily.
In these dark times, solidarity and compassion must guide our actions, supporting the victims of these senseless acts and demanding that peace and justice triumph over barbarity and hatred. It is time for the international community to mobilize to put an end to this spiral of violence that is bloodying the Beni region, so that the light of hope can finally shine on this wounded land.
