Athletics stars honoured at World Athlete of the Year Awards

The recent World Athlete of the Year Awards in Monaco saw Letsile Tebogo and Sifan Hassan among the big winners of the night.

Letsile Tebogo made history by becoming Botswana’s first ever Olympic champion at the Paris Games, setting a new personal best in the 200 metres. His incredible feat earned him the title of Male Athlete of the Year, and he expressed his gratitude, saying: “It feels amazing. It’s an incredible feeling to see all the hard work you’ve put in all year starting to pay off.” At just 21, Tebogo epitomises the youth and talent that drives the world of athletics.

Sifan Hassan, meanwhile, also received deserved recognition for her exceptional performances. Winning her first marathon title at the Paris Games, she had previously triumphed at the London Marathon the previous year. Acknowledging the honour, Hassan expressed his surprise, saying: “Thank you to the fans and everyone who voted. I never thought I would win this award because this year has been crazy. It’s not just me, all the athletes are incredible.”

A moment of silence was observed in memory of Kelvin Kiptum, who was lauded at last year’s ceremony and tragically passed away in a road accident earlier this year. His contribution to the world of athletics will be remembered by all who knew him.

This prestigious event highlighted the exceptional talents and extraordinary achievements of world-class athletes. It highlighted the importance of dedication, hard work and passion that drive those who continually push the boundaries of excellence in sport. Whether on the track, on the road or off, these inspiring athletes continue to amaze us with their determination and excellence.
