Managing the monkeypox epidemic in North Kivu: the call for collective action

The epidemiological situation of monkeypox (Mpox) remains a major concern in the North Kivu province of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Recent data presented by health authorities highlight an alarming increase in confirmed cases, particularly in the Far North part of the province. This reality requires an urgent and collective response to contain the spread of the disease.

Damas Mumbere Luhavo, in charge of the National Communication Program for Health Promotion in the region, highlights that among the 34 health zones in the North Kivu province, 15 are currently affected by monkeypox. In the Far North specifically, no fewer than 700 reported cases have been recorded, affecting seven health zones: Mutwanga, Vuhovi, Beni, Kyondo, Katwa, Alimbongo and Mangurejipa. This concentration of cases in a specific region underlines the urgent need to intensify prevention and awareness-raising measures.

Mumbere Luhavo’s recommendations highlight the urgency of strengthening barrier measures to stem the spread of the disease. He emphasizes the crucial importance of personal hygiene, including frequent hand washing with soap and water, the use of hydroalcoholic gel when necessary, and avoiding contact with the bodily fluids of an infected person. In addition, vaccination appears to be an essential pillar in the fight against monkeypox and health authorities are preparing to distribute vaccines and medicines in the Beni region to strengthen prevention and treatment efforts.

These data underscore the imperative of collective mobilization and concerted action to control the spread of monkeypox. Raising awareness among the population, strengthening hygiene measures and implementing an effective vaccination campaign are key elements in the fight against this viral disease. It is essential that everyone takes responsibility to protect their health and that of the community. The solidarity and commitment of all are essential to overcome this health crisis and ensure the health and well-being of all.
