Educational Reform in Nguru: A Model of Excellence for the Future of Education in Nigeria

The education reform initiatives in Nguru schools in Yobe State, Nigeria, are a testament to the government’s commitment to improving the quality of education. Led by Alhaji Baba Malam-Wali, the Secretary to the State Government, the reforms are aimed at transforming the educational landscape and providing better learning opportunities for the youth.

During a recent inspection of ongoing projects in various schools in the area, including the Government Higher Islamic College, Government Day Secondary School Gashua, Nigerian Tulip International College (NTIC), Yobe Campus, and Government Girls Unity College Damaturu, Malam-Wali highlighted the multi-layered approach adopted by the government to reform the education system.

Among the measures taken since 2019 is the decongestion of schools through the construction of new model schools, particularly in urban areas. Furthermore, collaborations with traditional authorities have improved student enrolment in rural primary schools.

The state government is also covering the registration fees of candidates for the West African School Certificate (WASCE) and National Examination Council (NECO) examinations in 2025, easing the financial burden on parents. In addition, new secondary schools have been established for girls, providing them with the opportunity to pursue their academic aspirations without hindrance.

The significant investments in the rehabilitation of schools, including the provision of furniture and other essential equipment, were also highlighted. The free feeding programme for secondary school students, costing the government about N500 million per month, is a testament to its commitment to ensuring optimal learning conditions for students.

The principals of secondary schools in Nguru expressed appreciation for the government’s unwavering support. They highlighted the positive impacts of government initiatives on student enrolment, academic performance and overall school infrastructure. The speakers commended the government’s support and commitment to the education sector.

In a context where accurate and unbiased reporting is crucial, Rajab Ismail, President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Yobe Council, stressed the importance of fair and accurate reporting to ensure transparency of information.

These educational reforms in Nguru exemplify the government’s commitment to educational excellence and the development of the younger generations. Through bold and targeted measures, Yobe State is paving the way for a bright future for the education and development of children and adolescents in the region.
