Resumption of classes in Nyiragongo: A positive turning point for education in North Kivu, DRC

Fatshimetrie, October 30, 2024 – The resumption of classes in Nyiragongo, in the North Kivu province of the Democratic Republic of Congo, marked a significant turning point in the education sector. After two months of strike by public sector teachers, the situation finally evolved towards a positive solution, welcomed by the Primary, Secondary and Technical Education (ESPT) subdivision of the region.

Primary school teachers showed determination by responding to the call of their union organizations for the resumption of classes. This commitment made it possible to save the current school year and to respond to the concerns of parents, worried about the consequences of child vagrancy linked to the cessation of classes.

The head of the ESPT subdivision of Nyiragongo, Mr. Shukuru Babi, expressed his satisfaction with the teachers for their return to class. He stressed the importance of putting an end to attempts to sabotage the government policy in favor of free basic education. The resumption of classes is therefore part of a positive dynamic to ensure the education of children and guarantee the pursuit of educational objectives.

This resumption of classes, which began on October 29, 2024, represents a step forward towards resolving teachers’ tensions and salary demands. Dialogue and cooperation between local authorities, teachers and unions have made it possible to overcome differences and find concrete solutions to ensure the continuity of students’ education.

In conclusion, the resumption of classes in Nyiragongo is the result of a constructive compromise between the different parties involved. It demonstrates the commitment of teachers to their students and their willingness to actively contribute to education and the development of the region. This initiative shows that, despite the challenges and obstacles encountered, perseverance and collaboration can lead to significant progress in the field of education.
