The essential role of MONUSCO in the stabilization of the DRC: Assessment after 25 years of mission

Over the past 25 years, the United Nations Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) has played a crucial role in consolidating peace and promoting human rights in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Since its creation in 1999 as the United Nations Mission in the Congo (MONUC) until its change of name to MONUSCO in 2010, this mission has been involved in various areas, ranging from supporting police reform to accompanying electoral processes.

Jean-Tobie Okala, MONUSCO’s Chief of Strategic Communication for Ituri Province, speaks enthusiastically about the progress made over the years. He highlighted the mission’s commitment to restoring peace, strengthening the capacities of the Congolese armed forces, as well as protecting human rights. For him, MONUSCO has played an essential role in reunifying a country torn apart by conflict.

Local actors such as Christian Vangazi also welcome the importance of MONUSCO’s intervention. The latter testifies to the past violence in Beni and the importance of the UN mission in protecting populations and stabilizing the region. He insists on the need for MONUSCO to transfer its skills before a total withdrawal.

After 25 years of presence in the DRC, it is undeniable that MONUSCO has contributed significantly to the stabilization of the country. However, challenges remain, particularly in terms of the transfer of skills and the consolidation of achievements. It is essential that the transition to greater autonomy for the Congolese authorities is carried out effectively to ensure the sustainability of the progress made.

Ultimately, MONUSCO’s presence in the DRC is a testament to the commitment of the international community to support peace and security in the region. The lessons learned over these 25 years must serve as a solid foundation for the future, in order to ensure a harmonious transition towards a stable and prosperous DRC, capable of overcoming the challenges that arise on its path towards sustainable development.
