The meteoric rise of Amina Orfi: The new queen of world squash

On November 24, a historic page was written in the world of squash, when Amina Orfi, an Egyptian athlete, won the gold medal at the Singapore Squash Open 2024. The young prodigy managed to beat her compatriot and world number three, Hania El Hammamy, to secure a place at the top of the podium. At just 17 years old, Orfi achieved this impressive feat by becoming the youngest player to win a gold-level event, surpassing the record held by Nour El Sherbini who won the Texas Open in 2014 at the age of 18.

The epic final between Orfi and El Hammamy lasted 96 minutes, ending with a score of 4-5 in favor of the young Egyptian. The win marked her sixth career title on the PSA Squash Tour, demonstrating the exceptional talent and determination of this player who is still on the rise.

Elsewhere, in the men’s category, it was Egypt’s Ali Farag who won the tournament title for the second year in a row. Facing Peru’s Diego Elias, Farag staged an incredible comeback from two sets down to win in five sets, after an intense 70-minute match.

Orfi and Farag’s success in Singapore further demonstrates the undisputed dominance of Egyptian squash players on the international stage. Egypt, a country where squash is extremely popular, has continually produced exceptional talent in the sport, reinforcing its reputation as a leading squash nation.

The Singapore Squash Open 2024 was held at OCBC Arena for six days, providing spectators with thrilling competition and spectacular spectacle. The event once again proved that squash is a fascinating and exhilarating sport that can evoke intense emotions and deliver unforgettable moments for fans around the world.
