Strengthening cooperation for the protection of human rights in Beni

A delegation from the United Nations Joint Human Rights Office (UNJHRO) visited Beni to assess the human rights situation in the region, with a particular focus on places of detention. This approach is part of a crucial context where the protection of civilians remains a key priority.

During this visit, Senior Commissioner Michel Mbala, Commander of the Congolese National Police (PNC) in Beni, expressed his satisfaction with the support provided by the United Nations Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO) in securing the population.

He stressed the importance of a pragmatic approach, based on a concrete understanding of the challenges encountered on the ground by law enforcement. Indeed, it is essential to take into account local realities in order to develop effective solutions adapted to the specific situation in Beni.

The High Commissioner stressed the need for fluid communication between local authorities and MONUSCO, in order to ensure good coordination in security actions. He also called for an increase in field visits, thus allowing a more precise assessment of the needs and obstacles encountered by law enforcement on a daily basis.

By emphasizing the importance of security as an absolute priority, the High Commissioner stressed that the protection of individuals and their property remains a crucial issue in ensuring stability and respect for human rights in the Beni region.

This meeting between the UNJHRO delegation and the local authorities of Beni illustrates the common desire to promote the protection of civilians and to strengthen cooperation between the different parties engaged in the fight for respect for human rights. Let us hope that the discussions and recommendations made during this visit will contribute to establishing a climate of trust and improving the security situation in the region.
