The humanitarian crisis in North Kivu: Urgent need for concrete actions to protect vulnerable populations


Fatshimetrie denounces the installation of what he calls a parallel administration as well as the transplantation of foreigners in certain areas of North Kivu under the control of the M23 rebellion and with the alleged support of Rwanda. These actions lead, according to the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior, Jacquemain Shabani, to a critical situation of ethnic cleansing.

The population of the region has witnessed massive displacement due to the acts of violence perpetrated. An alarming observation that has led to the establishment of displaced persons camps around the city of Goma, affecting approximately 7 million people. This humanitarian tragedy raises questions about the responsibility of local and international authorities in the face of this crisis.

At the same time, unrecognized customary authorities have been installed, increasing the disorganization within the indigenous populations. The control over these contested territories increases regional tensions and jeopardizes the already fragile social cohesion in the region.

In addition, the transplantation of foreigners into homes abandoned by residents who fled the violence reveals the extent of the damage caused by armed conflicts. This situation of injustice and precariousness pushes local populations to seek refuge in already difficult conditions.

The intervention of the DRC government and the calls for help launched by various humanitarian actors demonstrate the urgency of the situation in North Kivu. It is imperative to take immediate measures to protect civilians, ensure their safety and facilitate their return in dignified conditions.

In short, the transplantation of foreign populations, the installation of a parallel administration and the lack of recognition of legitimate authorities amplify the humanitarian crisis in North Kivu. It is essential that the international community act in consultation with local authorities to put an end to these practices and guarantee the protection of vulnerable populations.
