The inaugural Nelson Mandela Bay House of Legends Cup was a resounding success, bringing together renowned teams such as Kaizer Chiefs, Mamelodi Sundowns, Lamontville Golden Arrows and Chippa United. The event was attended by over 20 000 spectators, marking a memorable milestone for the region and the Eastern Cape Province.

The main objective of this initiative was to establish the House of Legends Cup as a viable and sustainable project for the years to come. In addition, it aimed to generate sponsor interest, bring the Eastern Cape back to the forefront of sports and entertainment, and provide spectators with a memorable experience both on and off the field.

The success of the event was marked by a record attendance of over 20 600 tickets sold, an unprecedented feat in the province. Ticket sales and full VIP box occupancy also marked a historic milestone for the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.

In addition to ticket revenue, commercial partnerships were key to ensuring the success of the event. These collaborations ensured that the event was a high-quality event with increased visibility for commercial partners, including Africa’s largest mobile operator.

The event also provided an opportunity to shine a spotlight on the Eastern Cape and restore its former glory in sports and entertainment. Through a successful collaboration between the MBDA, the Eastern Cape Provincial Government and the Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, this objective was fully achieved.

The input of local and provincial authorities, as well as the commitment of the various stakeholders in the tourism sector, contributed to the success of the event, with a significant increase in hotel occupancy over the weekend.

Beyond financial success, the ultimate goal was to provide a memorable experience for spectators. The exciting encounters, thrilling semi-finals and epic final between Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs met the expectations of the fans, making the day a truly historic one.

Learning from the first edition, avenues for improvement were identified for future editions, including the possibility of transforming the one-day event into a multi-day event, to provide a more diverse experience for spectators.

In conclusion, the Nelson Mandela Bay House of Legends Cup lived up to its reputation and set new standards for sporting events in the region. With such initial success, there is no doubt that this event has a bright future for years to come.
