The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) made history this Monday by hosting the 1245th meeting of the Peace and Security Council (PSC) of the African Union (AU) in Kinshasa. This meeting is of paramount importance in a context marked by major challenges to peace and security on the African continent. The theme chosen for this session, entitled “The implementation of disarmament, demobilization and reintegration (DDR) and post-conflict development and reconstruction (PCRD) programmes: challenges and prospects”, underlines Africa’s commitment to finding lasting solutions to end conflicts and promote reconstruction in war-affected areas.

Under the monthly rotating presidency of the AU PSC for the month of November 2024, the DRC is part of a dynamic of strengthening conflict management in Africa. As a member of the PSC since April 2024 for a two-year term, the country has set itself the mission of reaffirming the founding principles of the AU and working towards greater effectiveness in conflict resolution.

During this meeting, chaired by the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Francophonie, Thérèse Kayikwamba Wagner, delegates from the 15 PSC member states focused on the specific challenges related to the implementation of DDR and PCRD programs. This collective reflection focused on the need to assess the progress made and put in place more effective mechanisms to strengthen the impact of these programs on the ground.

Eastern DRC, marked by persistent conflicts, was at the heart of the discussions. Participants stressed the urgency of finding lasting solutions to promote peace and reconstruction in this region ravaged by violence. The presence of Ambassador Bankole Adeoye, Head of the AU Commission for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, reinforced the commitment of the pan-African organization to conflict resolution on the continent.

This PSC meeting illustrates the strong commitment of the AU and its Member States to finding lasting solutions to conflicts in Africa. By emphasizing the need to strengthen DDR and PCRD programs, participants affirmed their determination to work towards peace and post-conflict reconstruction in regions affected by violence.
