The international hunt for those responsible for the attack on the Brazilian Supreme Court in 2023

The attack on the Supreme Court of Brasilia and other government institutions that took place in January 2023 sent shockwaves not only in Brazil, but also in the region. Almost two years after the tragic events that took place in the Brazilian capital, the hunt for those responsible continues, this time even beyond the country’s borders.

The latest development in this case is taking place in Argentina, where the courts have ordered the detention of 61 Brazilian citizens suspected of having taken part in the attack on the headquarters of the three Brazilian powers. These individuals are currently in Argentina and are the subject of an extradition request by the Supreme Court of Brazil.

The detention order issued by an Argentine judge concerns individuals who have received final sentences of prison terms in connection with this case. This international judicial cooperation demonstrates the authorities’ commitment to prosecuting those responsible for this unprecedented act of violence.

Since the January 2023 attack, Brazilian authorities have conducted a major operation to apprehend individuals involved in the invasion of government institutions. Hundreds of people have been arrested as part of this investigation, and cooperation with Argentina has helped locate a number of fugitives who have taken refuge across the border.

The extradition decision taken by the Argentine judiciary is not the last step in the process. Those affected can appeal this decision before the Argentine Supreme Court, and the executive government also has a say in the extradition process.

The two individuals already arrested in Argentina, Joelton Gusmao de Oliveira and Rodrigo De Freitas Moro, were found guilty of attempted coup d’état, aggravated damage, armed criminal association and violent abolition of the democratic rule of law. Their arrest in Argentina shows that justice knows no borders when such serious acts are committed.

The January 2023 attack in Brasilia highlighted political and social tensions in Brazil, as well as the dangers posed by extremist rhetoric and growing polarization. International cooperation to bring to justice those responsible for such acts is essential to ensure the rule of law and democratic stability in the region.

In conclusion, the case of the attack on the Supreme Court and other institutions in Brasilia in January 2023 continues to generate reactions and actions across different countries, highlighting the importance of international cooperation to combat extremism and preserve democracy.
