The closing meeting of the Special Commission on Defense and Security between the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Republic of Congo recently took place under the leadership of the Deputy Prime Minister in charge of the Interior and Security, Jacquemain Shabani. This session, which took place over three days in Kinshasa, was an opportunity for teams of experts from both countries to work together in a spirit of cooperation to strengthen regional defense and security.
In his closing speech, Jacquemain Shabani welcomed the progress made by the experts, emphasizing the speed with which it was obtained. He also encouraged the joint technical commission to finalize a framework agreement on cross-border cooperation aimed at settling border disputes and promoting peaceful coexistence between the populations of the two countries.
Despite this progress, the Deputy Prime Minister recalled the importance of implementing previous resolutions that have remained pending for nine years. He stressed the need to quickly organize a joint monitoring mission to verify the demilitarization of the islets and to continue to make the official entry points operational.
Furthermore, Jacquemain Shabani welcomed the progress of the joint technical commission responsible for borders for the finalization of the demarcation in the Manianga region and encouraged the continuation of this work for the remaining kilometers. The signing of the report of the meeting of ministers and the adoption of the experts’ reports marked the end of this fruitful session.
Ultimately, the desire displayed by the authorities of the two countries to strengthen their cooperation in defense and security is encouraging for the future of the region.
