Elise Stefanik’s nomination as US ambassador to the United Nations raises questions about her previous position on Ukraine’s NATO membership. Once a strong advocate of Ukraine’s integration into NATO to strengthen regional stability, Stefanik now appears to be backtracking.
In 2022, Stefanik advocated for Ukraine’s NATO membership, strongly supporting the sending of military support, such as Javelin missiles, highlighting the Trump administration’s role in providing it. However, faced with a shift in public opinion regarding aid to Ukraine, including among Trump and other Republicans, Stefanik appears to be reconsidering her previous positions.
When asked about her current support for Ukraine’s NATO membership, Stefanik’s office did not provide a clear answer, saying only that she supports Trump’s policy of peace through strength. The about-face contrasts with her previous statements calling Russian actions in Ukraine genocide and singling out President Putin as a “thug” and a “war criminal.”
