Fatshimetrie is a media specialized in the analysis of security situations and tragic events that can upset our communities. In this special edition, we look at the recent events that occurred in the territory of Nyiragongo, in the province of North Kivu.
The night of Saturday to Sunday, November 10, was marked by tragic incidents that cost the lives of at least three people. Among the victims were a resident, a police officer and an armed bandit, all of whom died during various burglaries and incursions by armed bandits in several villages in the region.
Among the population of Nyiragongo, growing insecurity has sown terror and disarray. Residents say that the night was punctuated by violent attacks and looting, leaving communities in a climate of fear and uncertainty.
Local civil society deplores a significant deterioration in the security situation in the region, where the presence of armed men is increasingly worrying. Residents are increasingly vulnerable to acts of crime and attacks by bandits who sow chaos and destruction.
In the village of Bugamba, a resident was killed by unidentified assailants, while a police officer lost his life during a confrontation with armed bandits in the Rusayu 1st displaced persons site. Scenes of violence have multiplied, with displaced persons’ huts visited and goods stolen by unscrupulous criminals.
The president of the local civil society is outraged to see the victims of these thefts being, for the most part, people who are struggling to survive through small businesses, often supported by minimal credit funds from local associations. The fragility of these economic activities makes residents even more vulnerable to acts of delinquency.
Security forces have also been targeted during these incidents. An armed bandit was killed during an altercation with a security patrol in the Rusayu site, while a soldier was shot and injured while trying to intervene to prevent a burglary in the village of Karubamba.
The escalation of violence and insecurity is causing deep concern among the population of Nyiragongo. Local authorities and security forces must redouble their efforts to ensure the protection of residents and restore a climate of peace and security in the region.
Fatshimetrie will continue to closely monitor the developments in Nyiragongo and inform its readers about the measures taken to address this wave of violence and insecurity. Our commitment is to stand alongside the affected communities and make their voices heard in this difficult time.
