Modernization and Development of Civil Aviation in Egypt: Challenges and Perspectives

The development of the civil aviation sector in Egypt was recently at the center of the concerns of President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly and Minister of Civil Aviation Sameh al-Hefny. A summit meeting was held to discuss the progress and ongoing projects aimed at modernizing and developing this strategic sector for the country.

During this high-level meeting, a detailed overview was presented regarding the development of the civil aviation system, encompassing air navigation, aircraft fleets, airports and human resources, all based on a clear and comprehensive strategy. The efforts undertaken to modernize airport infrastructure, increase their capacity and improve passenger services were discussed. Particular attention was paid to increasing airport capacities, as well as promoting the participation of the private sector in the management and operation of airports.

Egyptian Presidential Spokesperson Ahmed Fahmy stressed during the meeting the importance of keeping the aviation sector in line with the continued growth of tourism in Egypt. This includes continuing efforts to modernize infrastructure, while respecting existing environmental standards. The development of sustainable fuel projects was also discussed, representing an essential pillar for reducing carbon emissions and promoting environmental efficiency.

President Sisi ordered the establishment of incentives to encourage the participation of the private sector in the development efforts of the aviation sector. He also stressed the need to continue intensified efforts across the system, particularly at Cairo International Airport, to double its capacity to 60 million annual passengers, in line with international standards and to support overall economic development in line with Egypt’s Vision 2030.

This high-level meeting illustrates the commitment of the Egyptian authorities to modernize and develop the civil aviation sector, with the aim of strengthening the country’s tourist appeal, fostering economic growth and promoting sustainable practices. It also demonstrates the desire to foster collaboration between the public and private sectors to ensure the harmonious and sustainable development of this sector, which is essential for the Egyptian economy.
