Ten years of artistic excellence at the Mohammed VI Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art

The Mohammed VI Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, located in Rabat, Morocco, has established itself as a key reference in the cultural landscape of the kingdom since its inauguration a decade ago. Indeed, this institution has hosted more than 35 major exhibitions highlighting works by some of the most renowned artists in the world.

The president of the National Museum Foundation, Mehdi Kotbi, spoke about the unexpected success of the last ten years, highlighting the importance of exhibitions dedicated to artists such as Picasso, Delacroix and Matisse. The mix of local Moroccan talents with international artists such as Alberto Giacometti, Henri Cartier-Bresson and Francisco Goya has created a rich and stimulating artistic dialogue.

The museum’s vision for the future is promising, with the desire to organize new exhibitions involving renowned artists. As the first space entirely dedicated to modern and contemporary art that meets international standards, the Mohammed VI Museum aims to expand its reach by highlighting more Arab and African artists.

The Portuguese Ambassador to Morocco, Carlos Marques, highlighted the importance of the two monumental installations by Portuguese artist Joana Vasconcelos presented on the occasion of the museum’s 10th anniversary. These works, already exhibited at the Château de Versailles and the Royal Academy of Arts, embody feminine power and symbolism, representing figures of strong and mythical women.

Currently, the exhibition “Cobra: a Multi-Headed Snake” offers visitors a dive into the post-war European avant-garde movement. The museum’s director, Mohammed El Idrissi, highlights the experimental and artistic dimension of Cobra, which combines surrealism and the exploration of colors to push the visual boundaries of the time.

In short, the Mohammed VI Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art positions itself as an essential place in the Moroccan art scene, offering a space for discovery and dialogue between cultures. Its diverse and ambitious programming reflects its desire to promote artistic diversity and to nourish the creativity of visitors in search of enriching and inspiring experiences.
