Fire in Kikwit: Urgent call for solidarity to rebuild the Pukulu Luba Institute

Kikwit, Democratic Republic of Congo – The fire that ravaged several buildings of the Pukulu Luba Institute in Bulungu 3 sub-division a few days ago has sparked a deep wave of indignation within the educational community and the local population. The criminal act perpetrated by unidentified individuals has not only caused considerable material damage, but has also jeopardized the education and future of more than 250 students who attended this establishment.

The images broadcast show the extent of the damage, with 4 buildings reduced to ashes and many educational equipment, such as benches, desks and blackboards, completely destroyed. These essential elements for ensuring a conducive learning environment vanished in one night, leaving behind empty classrooms and children helpless in the face of this calamity.

The cry of distress of teachers, parents of students and the community echoes through these smoking ruins. They are launching an urgent appeal to the educational authorities and people of goodwill to come to the aid of these young students who are now deprived of their school. In an already difficult context marked by the precariousness and challenges of education in the DRC, this fire is a hard blow for the educational community of Kikwit.

Speculations about a possible conflict between the local population and the head of the school highlight the tensions and rivalries that can sometimes shake the social fabric of these communities. However, whatever the cause, it is imperative that light be shed on this heinous act and that concrete measures be taken to guarantee the safety of schools and the protection of the children who study there.

In this period of heavy rains, when living conditions are already precarious, it is urgent to rebuild not only the buildings of the Pukulu Luba institute, but also the hope and future of these young students devastated by this tragedy. Education is an essential pillar of a society’s development, and every child deserves the chance to learn and grow in a safe environment that is conducive to their development.

Together, let’s mobilize to support the reconstruction of this school and to offer the children of Kikwit the promise of a better future, where education remains an inalienable right and a source of hope for an entire generation.
