Successful FARDC operation: Capture of armed fighters in the Mambasa region

In the heart of a region plagued by armed conflict, twelve fighters belonging to the Mai-Mai group Union of Patriots for the Liberation of Congo (UPLC) were apprehended by the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) during an operation in the Mambasa territory, in Ituri. This intervention made it possible to put an end to the illicit activities of these fighters designated by Kambale Mayani for the exploitation of minerals and the securing of illegal concessions in the region.

Colonel Mak Hazukay, spokesperson for the regional army, revealed that these armed individuals had been captured in possession of several firearms, including six AK-47s, between Kasoko and Biakato. Their presence in the area was part of a broader conflict between the various armed groups active in Ituri, such as the ADF and the wazalendo from North Kivu.

Indeed, for several months, clashes and deadly attacks have shaken the Mambasa region, endangering the lives of civilians and local stability. The UPLC fighters themselves were on the move from their stronghold of Kalunguta, on the Beni-Butembo road, where they were initially stationed before taking up arms again.

Despite a stated desire to lay down their arms and participate in the disarmament, demobilization and reintegration process, the UPLC members have not found a framework conducive to this transition, leaving a constant threat hanging over the population of the region. Local and national authorities remain mobilized to put an end to the actions of armed groups and restore peace in eastern DRC.

This FARDC operation marks an important step in the fight against the militias and armed groups that are sowing chaos and terror in the eastern provinces of Congo. It demonstrates the authorities’ commitment to ensuring the safety of citizens and restoring order in a region scarred by years of conflict. The capture of these fighters is a strong signal to armed groups active in the region, demonstrating that law and order will prevail against those seeking to sow violence and instability.

In conclusion, this FARDC operation underlines the crucial importance of cooperation and coordination between security forces to combat armed groups and ensure the safety of civilian populations. It also reminds us that peace and stability in the DRC require continued efforts and constant vigilance to counter the security threats facing the country.
