Lt. General Lagbaja: A Tribute to a National Hero


On this tragic day, Nigeria mourns the loss of one of its greatest soldiers, Lt. General Lagbaja, who passed away at the age of 56 in Lagos. His passing leaves a huge void in the Nigerian military landscape and arouses deep sadness among his compatriots. This exemplary soldier dedicated his life to national security and peace, leaving behind an indelible legacy.

Born on February 28, 1968, Lagbaja’s military journey began at the Nigerian Defence Academy in 1987. After five years of rigorous training, he graduated as a Second Lieutenant in the Infantry Corps in 1992 and rose through the ranks to become the Chief of Army Staff in June 2023. His career exemplified an unwavering dedication to national security, marked by his participation in critical operations such as Operation ZAKI in Benue, Lafiya Dole in Borno, and Forest Sanity in Kaduna and Niger States.

With a brilliant strategic mind, Lagbaja continued his education and earned a Master’s degree in Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College. He is remembered by his colleagues as a steadfast leader who stood firm in the face of challenges.

He leaves behind a wife, Mariya, and two children, who are witnesses to his dedication to family as well as his professional life. Lt. Gen. Lagbaja will forever be remembered as a national hero who sacrificed his life for the security and stability of Nigeria.

In this time of mourning, the country pays tribute to an exceptional man, whose legacy will be celebrated and honoured for generations to come. His commitment to the defence of the nation and his inspiring leadership will remain etched in the history of Nigeria, a testament to his unwavering determination to serve his country.
