Youth Climate Forum: Engaging Congolese Youth for a Sustainable Future

Fatshimetrie, November 4, 2024 (AFP).- The Congolese capital is the scene of a major event at the beginning of the month: the launch of the fourth edition of the Youth Climate Forum, organized by the Dynamique des jeunes pour l’environnement et le développement durable (Dyjedd). This meeting, which takes place from November 4 to 6, brings together many young people from Kinshasa to deepen their understanding of climate issues in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Samy Ilunga, the coordinator of the Dyjedd, explains that the main objective of this forum is to educate young people on the crucial issue of climate change, while allowing them to exchange and share their perspectives. He also emphasizes the importance of creating opportunities for these young people to meet donors and obtain financial support for their initiatives in favor of the green economy.

The active participation and enthusiasm of the young people present at this event demonstrate their desire to act and commit to the environment. Aimée Mbuyi, Director of Sustainable Development at the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development, highlights the government’s continued commitment to training and building the capacities of young people and women on greenhouse gas management.

The various panels and discussions that took place during the first day of the forum laid the foundations for an in-depth reflection on how Congolese youth can contribute significantly to the fight against climate change. For Me Edo Lilakako, coordinator of the association “Juriste pour l’environnement au Congo”, young people represent an important force in the Francophonie and have a key role to play in promoting sustainable development.

This edition of the Youth Climate Forum is distinguished by the creation of a 2024 charter that will summarize the recommendations and conclusions of the work, as well as the publication of an advocacy document called “Acte” that will be made available to young people in libraries. These initiatives are essential to raise awareness and mobilize Congolese youth around environmental and climate issues.

In conclusion, Fogec4 is a valuable opportunity for young people in Kinshasa to become aware of the importance of their role in preserving the environment and the planet. Their involvement and commitment are essential to meet the challenges posed by climate change and to build a more sustainable and balanced future for future generations.
