The importance of speech therapy in the treatment of language disorders

Fatshimetrie, November 4, 2024 – In a recent interview in Kinshasa, a speech therapist strongly recommended that parents whose children suffer from language disorders seek speech therapy or speech therapy. This recommendation is particularly aimed at children with communication difficulties, such as deaf-mute, autistic, stuttering, mentally retarded or learning disabilities.

According to speech therapist Ekolele Ayuti Angara, speech therapy plays a crucial role in the rehabilitation of patients by correcting language deficiencies and helping them develop their language skills. Whether it is to improve pronunciation, develop vocabulary or teach basic reading and writing skills, speech therapy aims to establish oral, written or sign language in people with difficulties.

Furthermore, speech therapy is also essential in the treatment of deafness, offering palliative techniques such as lip reading for the hearing impaired. The “La Rencontre” center in Lingwala, Kinshasa, specializes in this type of treatment and supports patients in learning sign language and lip movements.

In addition, speech therapy also works with people who have lost the ability to speak or write following a stroke. Through voice recovery methods and sound and word rehabilitation, speech therapists help these patients gradually regain their communication skills.

Discovered in the 1990s in the Democratic Republic of Congo, speech therapy, often overlooked, plays a vital role in raising awareness and screening for language disorders. By conducting in-depth tests on various aspects such as voice, comprehension, pronunciation and phraseology, speech therapists help improve the quality of life of many patients.

In short, speech therapy and logopedics offer concrete solutions to help children and adults in difficulty overcome their language disorders and develop their language skills. Thanks to these specialized interventions, many individuals can regain a better quality of life and greater autonomy in their daily communication.
