The General Assembly of Justice in the DRC: towards a crucial judicial reform


Fatshimetrie, November 4, 2024 – Legal reforms in the Congolese judicial sector are at the heart of the debates as the General Assembly of Justice in the Democratic Republic of Congo opens. The Minister of Justice, Constant Mutamba, stressed the importance of these meetings in the search for concrete solutions to the problems undermining the country’s judicial system.

The main objective of the General Assembly is to carry out an in-depth diagnosis of the current situation of Justice in the DRC and to propose constitutional and legal reforms. The President of the Republic expressed his wish to see a more equitable and efficient Justice, thus contributing to the improvement of the business climate in the country.

The theme “why is Congolese justice sick” questions the dysfunctions of the judicial system in the DRC. Minister Constant Mutamba insists on the need to identify the problems and find concrete solutions to remedy them. He is committed to ensuring that the recommendations from these meetings are implemented to improve the functioning of Justice in the country.

The States General of Justice were preceded by a phase of popular consultations in all Congolese provinces, mobilizing more than 3,000 participants representing various sections of the population. This participatory approach aims to take into account the concerns and expectations of each citizen in the reform of the judicial system.

The second phase of the States General of Justice will be held from November 6 to 13 and will allow for deeper discussions and proposals for the future of Justice in the DRC. These meetings mark an important step in the desire to modernize and strengthen the country’s judicial sector to guarantee fair and effective justice for all Congolese citizens.
