Rural electrification: an essential lever for the sustainable development of remote areas

Fatshimetrie, November 4, 2024. Rural electrification is a crucial issue for the sustainable development of rural areas, an importance highlighted by experts in the Kongo Central province and other regions of the Democratic Republic of Congo. According to recent statements by an international consultant, Mr. Simon Mboso kia Mputu, the link between electrification and the improvement of living conditions in remote areas is undeniable.

In an exclusive interview with Fatshimetrie, the consultant put forward several arguments in favor of rural electrification. He notably stressed that access to electricity would allow the development of industrial activities in rural areas, such as the processing of agricultural products. Small agri-food units could thus emerge, offering both economic and social opportunities to local populations.

In addition to promoting the industrialization of rural areas, electrification would also have a positive impact on other key sectors such as education and health. In schools, electricity would allow teachers to prepare their lessons more efficiently and students to study in better conditions. In the health sector, doctors would be able to perform surgeries, provide appropriate care to patients and store medicines in optimal conditions.

In addition, the installation of computer parks and the implementation of food preservation devices would be other positive outcomes of rural electrification. Households would also benefit from this access to electricity, by being able to use household appliances such as lamps, refrigerators, washing machines and fans.

However, despite these many benefits, the consultant also raised a crucial point: the importance of ensuring equitable access to electricity for the entire rural population. He stressed the need to combat inequalities in financial access to this essential resource, in order to ensure that all rural residents can benefit from the opportunities offered by electrification.

In conclusion, rural electrification appears to be an essential lever for the sustainable development of rural areas, offering prospects for improving living conditions, economic growth and social progress for local populations. It now remains essential to put in place concrete policies and actions to promote equitable access to electricity in rural areas, thus contributing to the harmonious and inclusive development of these regions.
