Interprovincial cooperation for the development of Greater Kivu: A strategic alliance for a prosperous future

Fatshimetrie, November 3, 2024 – The creation of an interprovincial consultation framework for the development of Greater Kivu marks an important step in cooperation between the provinces of Maniema, North Kivu and South Kivu in the Democratic Republic of Congo. This initiative aims to promote the sharing of experiences, the exchange of information in real time, as well as the resolution of common problems to promote the integral development and well-being of the population.

Major General Peter Cirimwami, military governor of North Kivu, underlines the importance of this consultation framework which will allow provincial authorities to work together to realize the development vision of President Félix Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo. Despite the security challenges facing the region, he remains optimistic about the possibilities of progress and improving the living conditions of the inhabitants.

Since taking office in April 2023, the military governor of North Kivu has implemented various development projects, such as the construction of road infrastructure, the installation of boreholes, and the strengthening of security through Operation Safisha muji. This initiative led to the arrest of several criminals and the recovery of firearms, thus marking a strong commitment against urban insecurity in Goma.

In addition, the governor emphasizes the importance of maritime security in the region, particularly after the tragic sinking of the MV/Merdi boat last October. Measures have been taken to strengthen security on Lake Kivu, such as the mandatory wearing of life jackets for passengers, or the ban on night navigation. These actions aim to protect the lives of residents and travelers in the region.

In a context marked by complex security and economic issues, interprovincial cooperation appears to be an essential lever for the development of Greater Kivu. By joining forces and resources, the provinces of Maniema, North Kivu and South Kivu can together address the challenges that stand in their way and pave the way for a better future for all.
