Inauguration of the Mobale Bridge: a symbol of rebirth for eastern DRC

Kamituga, 02 Nov 2024 – The recent inauguration of the Mobale Bridge over the Mobale River in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo marks a milestone in the restoration of the region’s road infrastructure. After an 11-month rehabilitation, this iconic structure is now operational again, providing users with easier access across the region.

The Mobale Bridge, with a capacity of 24 tonnes, plays a crucial role in the region’s road connectivity, linking the town of Kamituga to the Wamuzimu chiefdom in Mwenga territory. Prior to its rehabilitation, its defect had led to its closure for more than a quarter, disrupting the flow of local activities.

The renovation of the Mobale Bridge was made possible thanks to funding from the South Kivu provincial government, led by Professor Jean Jacques Purusi. The work was supervised by a team of competent technicians from the Roads Office, under the direction of Engineer Mukenge Shabantu. This fruitful collaboration between the provincial authorities, mining operators and the local population has made it possible to breathe new life into this essential structure for mobility in the region.

During the inauguration ceremony, the provincial Minister of Infrastructure, Public Works and Reconstruction, Georges Kibonge Babingwa, stressed the importance of respecting the guidelines for using the bridge in order to preserve its sustainability. He also highlighted the strategic nature of this infrastructure for the economic and social development of the region, facilitating trade and the movement of populations.

The Mayor of Kamituga, Alexandre Bundya M’pila, expressed his satisfaction with the rehabilitation of the Mobale Bridge, highlighting its positive impact on the local community. This infrastructure, located on the general interest road linking several key cities in the region, is an essential link in the road network of South Kivu.

In conclusion, the recommissioning of the Mobale Bridge is a significant step in improving road infrastructure in the DRC. This rehabilitation project demonstrates the commitment of local authorities to ensuring the safety and smooth flow of travel in the region, thus contributing to the socio-economic development of the population.
