Democratic Republic of Congo introduces malaria vaccination into its routine immunization program, a major step forward in the fight against malaria

The Democratic Republic of Congo is about to take a major step in the fight against malaria. Indeed, from October 31, the country will introduce malaria vaccination into its routine immunization program, starting in the Mbanza-Ngungu health zone, located near the capital Kinshasa.

This new initiative reinforces existing measures, such as the distribution of treated mosquito nets, in order to reduce the devastating impact of malaria on the Congolese population. Considered one of the leading causes of illness and death among children in Africa, malaria remains a major challenge for the health systems of countries on the continent.

The provincial coordinator of the National Malaria Control Program, Dr. Nono Koko, underlines the importance of this new step in the prevention of the disease. According to him, the introduction of malaria vaccination demonstrates the sustained efforts of the Congolese government and its partners to improve public health.

The DRC thus becomes the 15th African country to offer malaria vaccination, which represents a significant step forward in the fight against this endemic disease. Children, who are particularly vulnerable to malaria, will benefit from this new preventive measure, which could save many lives.

Cyril Nogier, Gavi Senior Country Director for the DRC, welcomes this progress and underlines the importance of investing in strengthening health systems to ensure the implementation of effective vaccination programs. This initiative is part of an ambitious national strategic plan, aiming to protect 80% of at-risk populations against malaria by 2028.

In addition to vaccination, the plan includes measures such as the distribution of impregnated mosquito nets, chemoprevention of seasonal malaria, vector control and improved malaria case management. This comprehensive approach aims to significantly reduce the prevalence of the disease and improve the health of the Congolese population.

This progress in the fight against malaria in the DRC demonstrates the country’s determination to improve the health of its citizens and respond to major health challenges. By working in collaboration with its partners, the DRC is on the path to progress and health for all.
