A flourishing future: when solidarity rhymes with agricultural resilience

Fatshimétrie, October 29, 2024 – A wind of solidarity is blowing in the territory of Nyiragongo, a stone’s throw from the city of Goma, in the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is here, in the Muja group, that a wonderful community resilience project is taking shape. War displaced persons and local residents have joined forces to exploit a community field, kindly offered by the authorities.

Under the leadership of Mr. Kasereka Miroro, in charge of field activities, three hectares of potatoes, as well as four hectares of corn and beans have already been planted. This project, initiated locally, aims to support and supervise displaced and indigenous populations, in a process of empowerment and food security. The objective is clear: to double or even triple production by 2025, to meet the growing needs of the community.

At the heart of this initiative, agronomist Amani Bahati, himself a former war displaced person, shares his know-how and experience to ensure the success of this collective adventure. Women, essential actors in this project, express their ardent desire for peace and security in the region. They cultivate not only to meet their needs, but also to preserve tranquility and social cohesion.

Mrs. Liberata Kazimwa, a leading figure among the displaced women, emphasizes the importance of securing land and preserving peace to ensure the sustainability of their crops. She makes an urgent appeal to the authorities for support in bean, corn and potato seeds, in order to guarantee optimal and diversified production.

This approach resolutely focused on mutual aid and cooperation aims to fight against famine and strengthen cohesion between the various communities present in the region. The war displaced persons, who have been living in Muja for three years, aspire to rebuild their lives and build strong ties with the local inhabitants. More than just an agricultural activity, this community field embodies the hope for a better future, rooted in solidarity and sharing.

Ultimately, this community resilience project represents much more than just an agricultural initiative. It embodies the fierce will of local and displaced populations to rise together, hand in hand, to build a brighter future. It symbolizes the strength of solidarity and cooperation, in the service of peace and the well-being of all. May this community field, like a garden of fraternity, continue to instill hope and courage in those who participate in it, for a more promising and united future.
