The Controversy of the Constitutional Revision in the DRC: Between Defense of Integrity and Unnecessary Risks

In the current political turmoil on the Congolese scene, a major controversy is shaking the country: the question of revising the Constitution. While President Félix Tshisekedi is considering this possibility, an increasingly united opposition is rising up against this project, warning of the potentially devastating consequences of such a move.

Opposition leader Moïse Katumbi, a fervent defender of constitutional integrity, strongly denounces any attempt to change the country’s fundamental law. He insists that the real problem lies in governance and not in the Constitution itself. According to him, changing the Constitution would in no way resolve the challenges facing the DRC, but could on the contrary open the way to additional social tensions.

For his part, Martin Fayulu, a leading figure in the Congolese opposition, goes even further by accusing Félix Tshisekedi of playing with fire. He stresses that the country must first and foremost face urgent challenges such as preserving its territorial integrity, combating poverty and insecurity, and respecting human rights. For Fayulu, a revision of the Constitution would only distract from the real problems facing the DRC.

CENCO, an influential religious institution in the DRC, also expresses its reservations about any amendment to the Constitution. For Donatien Nshole, Secretary General of CENCO, such a move could worsen the social and security instability of the already fragile country. He warns against the risks of such an initiative in a context where the country is facing numerous tensions and crises.

Faced with this fierce opposition, the UDPS, the ruling party, is mobilizing its troops in favor of constitutional revision. Augustin Kabuya, Secretary General of the UDPS, defends this initiative as an electoral promise and insists on its legitimacy. However, this position of the ruling party highlights the deep divisions that are currently running through Congolese society.

Beyond political divisions, the issue of revising the Constitution raises crucial questions about the democratic future of the DRC. Between the aspirations of some to consolidate the power in place and the fears of others about potential abuses, the debate promises to be heated and complex. In this context, Congolese society must demonstrate vigilance and responsibility to preserve the integrity of its institutions and respect for its democratic principles.
