Title: Challenges and Advances in Immunization in Kwara: The Importance of Vaccination for Public Health
In a context where public health occupies a prominent place, the immunization situation in Kwara, Nigeria, raises as much concern as hope. At a meeting of the State Immunization Task Force, Dr. Nusirat Elelu, Executive Secretary of the Kwara Primary Health Care Development Agency, highlighted the challenges and advances in this crucial area.
The emergence of orphan viruses, one of which has been identified in the region, places Kwara among the high-risk areas. This event raises major questions on public health, particularly with regard to the pathogenicity of these viruses. In response to this situation, two targeted Outbreak Response Immunization campaigns were conducted, demonstrating the responsiveness and commitment of local authorities in the fight against infectious diseases.
A significant breakthrough was the introduction of the Human Papilloma Virus Vaccine into the Kwara Routine Immunization Schedule, placing the state at the forefront of regions implementing this life-saving measure. Furthermore, the mapping of unimmunized or partially immunized children helped to boost vaccination coverage, with no fewer than 17,878 children vaccinated in just three days.
Despite this progress, challenges persist, particularly due to non-compliance with immunization among some migrants, hampering the effectiveness of the campaigns. In this context, the support of local authority chairmen is essential to ensure the success of immunization programs at the local level.
In conclusion, immunization remains a cornerstone of public health in Kwara, highlighting the critical importance of vaccination in preventing infectious diseases and protecting the population. Strong commitment and close cooperation between the authorities and the community are essential to address current challenges and ensure a healthier future for all people in the region.
