Justice challenges over governor’s immunity in Bello case and ₦80.2 billion sum

In a highly publicized case, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has issued a warrant for Bello over his alleged involvement in financial crimes totalling a whopping ₦80.2 billion.

In a riveting interview on Channels Television’s Inside Sources, Onanuga clarified the complexity of Bello’s situation due to the immunity currently enjoyed by Kogi State Governor Usman Ododo.

“Bello is hiding under the veil of immunity of the governor,” he explained, noting that the immunity hampers police operations inside the governor’s residence.

Since the EFC issued a warrant for Bello in April, attempts to apprehend him have been consistently thwarted.

Onanuga stressed: “If he stays inside Governor Ododo’s house, the police can’t do anything because they would be violating that immunity.”

This protective measure taken by Governor Ododo has led to great frustration among law enforcement agencies.

Drawing a parallel with international law, Onanuga said: “It’s like a diplomat who has some immunity; you can’t do anything about it.”

The case continues to generate intense debate, highlighting the legal complexities surrounding high politics and the implications of granting immunity to sitting governors. The ongoing efforts to unravel the case highlight the challenges facing regulators and raise questions about the need to reform and clarify the laws governing the immunity of political leaders.
