Challenges and prospects for the aviation sector in West Africa: The case of Air Peace

When Fatshimetrie, the renowned online publication dedicated to air transport news, recently relayed the words of Allen Onyema, Chairman of Air Peace, on the occasion of the celebration of the airline’s 10th anniversary, they resonated as a vibrant call for sustainability and long-term vision in an industry where sustainability remains a constant challenge.

Indeed, Onyema highlighted the underlying philosophy that has guided Air Peace since its inception: to go beyond the mere pursuit of profits to focus on job creation and contribution to economic growth. This bold and committed perspective has enabled Air Peace to thrive and become today the largest air carrier in West Africa, thus demonstrating that a holistic approach focused on social impact can also be synonymous with commercial success.

Yet, the remarks of Festus Keyamo, Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation, shed a stark light on the systemic challenges facing many airlines in the region. While Nigeria is a major hub for domestic air travel in Africa, with a dominant market share, it is alarming to note that many airlines have failed to survive beyond a few years. The key question remains: with such demand and passenger flow, why are airlines struggling to thrive in the long term?

Keyamo highlighted the need to address these structural challenges head on, stressing the government’s commitment to supporting the sector and fostering its growth. With over a hundred airlines having disappeared in the last four decades, it is imperative to find sustainable solutions for existing players to survive.

Thus, Air Peace’s success story, driven by a bold and engaging vision, is both an inspiring example and a reminder of the persistent challenges that plague the aviation landscape in West Africa. By focusing on social and economic impact, airlines in the region can envision a prosperous and sustainable future, where commercial success and social utility are not mutually exclusive, but complementary.
