On the sidelines of the Annual Meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank in Washington, the Minister of State, Minister of National Education and New Citizenship (EDU-NC), Raïssa Malu Dinanga, recently shared President Tshisekedi’s ambitious vision for the qualitative improvement of education in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
During her participation in a high-level panel on the theme “State of Africa 2024 – Education and skills for the future of Africa”, organized as part of the Annual Meetings of the IMF and the WB, Raïssa Malu presented the main axes on which the Congolese government is relying to transform the education system. These areas include improving the socio-professional conditions of teachers, strengthening the National Education administration, digitalizing education, the need to consolidate partnerships with technical and financial stakeholders to promote investment in infrastructure, as well as the importance of creating inclusive and secure school environments.
Referring to the free education program, Raïssa Malu highlighted the progress made by the government, particularly in increasing access to education, but also the persistent challenges in terms of quality. She highlighted the importance of making schools accessible to all, emphasizing that financial barriers, especially for girls and marginalized groups, remain an obstacle to education for all.
Regarding improving the quality of education, the Minister of State stressed the crucial role of teachers in this process. She stressed the need to invest in the continuing training of teachers, inspectors and in improving working conditions, as they are essential pillars of the quality of education. In addition, she highlighted the government’s desire to make the administration more efficient to support these efforts.
Asked about the strategic choices to be made to reconcile these priorities and ensure sustainable investments in education, Raïssa Malu stressed the need to make difficult decisions, requiring an initial investment to facilitate the implementation of these measures. She also stressed the importance of partnerships with institutions such as the World Bank to mobilize additional resources and direct investments towards concrete and effective actions.
Finally, the Minister of EDU-NC spoke of the importance of patience in planning long-term investments, over a period of five years, emphasizing the need for a long-term vision to ensure sustainable and effective educational reform.
Thus, the presentation of President Tshisekedi’s vision for education in the DRC by Raïssa Malu Dinanga during this major international event highlighted the Congolese government’s commitment to quality education and inclusion for all.
