Major progress in the rehabilitation of National Road No. 4 in the Democratic Republic of Congo

Fatshimetrie October 27, 2024 – Road infrastructure in the Democratic Republic of Congo is experiencing a new boom with the ongoing rehabilitation of National Road No. 4, particularly the Kisangani-Komanda-Beni section. A major breakthrough was announced by the Minister of State for Infrastructure during a recent inspection visit to Kisangani.

The objective is clear: to carry out an asphalt test strip on a 200-meter section by December 2024. This first step will make it possible to assess the work already carried out and make the necessary adjustments to ensure the quality and durability of the road. The Minister of State, Alexis Gisaro Muvunyi, expressed his satisfaction with the progress of the work, which is on track.

Since the start of work two months ago, significant progress has been made. The embankment works have been successfully completed, making the road passable up to approximately 250 kilometers from Kisangani. This phase is crucial to ensure the smooth flow of traffic and guarantee the safety of users.

The rehabilitation of National Road No. 4 is part of a Public Private Partnership (PPP) involving the Chinese company CCCC and the Roads Office as delegated project owner. To date, the base camp is operational, the quagmires have been treated and the laying of the foundation layer is underway, garnering the approval of the local population.

Despite the logistical challenges related to the transport of machinery and equipment, Minister Gisaro wants to reassure that these problems will be resolved. Arrangements have been made to ensure the transport of the necessary equipment to the site, demonstrating the commitment of the government and the company to successfully complete this major project.

Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi, President of the Democratic Republic of Congo, attaches particular importance to this road project of national interest. The Minister of Infrastructure has committed to ensuring regular monitoring of the progress of the work, with a view to meeting the deadlines set for its completion, partly over a period of 4 years.

In short, the rehabilitation of National Road No. 4 represents a real challenge for the development and connectivity of the country. This major project, carried out within the framework of a public-private partnership, is part of an approach aimed at improving the accessibility of the areas served by this strategic road, thus contributing to strengthening the economic and social development of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
