Fatshimetrie, the reference for international information, brings you the recent decisions of the UN Security Council concerning the situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo. In a statement published recently, the Security Council expressed its strong condemnation of the foreign military support provided to the M23 rebel group, supported in particular by Rwanda, as well as to any other armed group operating in the region.
This statement underlines the need to end this support and calls for the immediate withdrawal of any foreign presence from Congolese territory. The Security Council also deplores the recent ceasefire violations by the M23 and calls on all parties to scrupulously respect the agreements signed with a view to a return to peace.
In addition, the Council unequivocally condemns all armed groups operating in the DRC, such as the M23, the ADF and the FDLR, as well as the illegal exploitation of natural resources by these groups and associated criminal networks. The United Nations reaffirms its commitment to the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of the DRC, as well as all States in the region.
The Security Council encourages the DRC and Rwanda to engage constructively in the ongoing peace process, thus providing a valuable opportunity to achieve a lasting and peaceful solution to the regional conflict. It actively supports efforts aimed at a lasting cessation of hostilities and the search for a diplomatic settlement to establish lasting peace.
Finally, the Security Council reiterates its full support for the actions of MONUSCO, as well as for the Special Representative of the Secretary-General and the Special Envoy for the Great Lakes, stressing the crucial importance of these initiatives for stability and security in the region.
