The imminent arrival of the storm “al-Maknasa”: essential preparations and precautions

The evolution of storms is a fascinating phenomenon that always arouses the interest and concern of coastal residents. In Egypt, as winter approaches, attention turns to the arrival of the famous storm “al-Maknasa” also known as “The Broom”. This weather phenomenon hits several coastal governorates with its share of heavy rains, turbulent winds and rough waves over a period of four days.

The Maknasa storm gets its name from its ability to sweep away clouds and reorganize weather conditions after the autumn disturbances. The cold winds blow from the northwest, bringing strong sea currents and torrential rains. It is the first winter storm in Egypt, usually occurring after mid-November each year and lasting about four days.

Coastal governorates are taking measures to educate citizens on how to deal with these storms. It is recommended to cancel non-essential appointments during heavy rains, to facilitate travel. Reducing vehicle traffic allows emergency vehicles to work efficiently to evacuate water from the roads. It is essential to respect speed limits and maintain an increased safety distance from other vehicles. In addition, it is essential to avoid standing under old balconies that are likely to collapse and not to park vehicles under trees that are at risk of falling.

Changing storms and weather conditions bring their share of concerns and challenges for coastal populations. Through simple precautions and increased awareness, it is possible to minimize risks and effectively deal with these natural phenomena. It is therefore essential to stay informed and prepared to face the vagaries of the weather.
