The fight against insecurity in Goma: Assessment and prospects of the operation “Safisha Muji wa Goma”

In the current context of the city of Goma, North Kivu, the operation “Safisha Muji wa Goma” was launched to combat the rise in insecurity. During the first six months of this initiative, the authorities have achieved an encouraging result, with more than 450 suspected criminals arrested and more than 350 weapons recovered. This demonstrates the commitment of the security forces to ensure the tranquility of the city’s inhabitants.

The police mayor of Goma, Senior Superintendent Kapend Kamand Faustin, stressed the importance of cooperation between the defense and security forces and the local population. He also warned against populist statements that could harm the stability of the region, calling for unified support to combat crime.

The security situation remains tense despite the efforts made, as evidenced by the recent incidents of insecurity reported in the region. The security forces regularly intervene to contain this violence and protect the inhabitants.

Local dignitaries welcome the actions taken by the authorities in the context of the ongoing state of siege. Me Jean Paul Lumbulumbu, Honorary Provincial Deputy, expressed his support for initiatives aimed at pacifying the city and promoting its development.

However, some political actors and members of civil society question the effectiveness of the state of siege in restoring peace and security. Despite the successive extensions of this measure, voices are being raised to call for strategies more adapted to the complexity of the security challenges in the North Kivu and Ituri region.

Finding a balance between reinforced security measures and respect for citizens’ rights is essential to ensure lasting peace. Unity and cooperation between the different stakeholders are essential to address security challenges and ensure a peaceful future for the inhabitants of Goma.

Ultimately, the security and stability of the city of Goma depends on the collective commitment of all actors involved, both at the local and national levels. Everyone has a role to play in building a safe and prosperous future for this community.
