The Challenge of Patriotism in Nigeria: A Call to Action by Jega

At the launch of the Rebranding Nigeria Initiative (URNI) at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja, the political scientist delivered a powerful speech that captivated the audience. Jega’s chosen theme, “Let us rise up, Patriots, and be proud of our nation,” highlights the importance of patriotism at a time when Nigeria is beset by challenges that could lead to the label of a “failed state.”

Recalling Nigeria’s glorious past that was once a beacon of hope for Africa and the black race, Jega highlighted the stark contrast with the current disillusionment among citizens. He pointed to leadership challenges dating back to the 1970s, saying the situation has deteriorated alarmingly.

Jega cautioned against the difference between “true patriotism” and “blind patriotism”, stressing the danger of unscrupulous individuals who exploit patriotism for personal gain, thereby contributing to national challenges. He stressed the role of true patriots who defend the interests of their country responsibly and called on Nigerians to actively engage in civic duties at the local and national levels.

Despite the bleak picture, Jega expressed his belief in Nigeria’s potential, stating: “I do not believe that Nigeria is a failed state, but that it is failing”. He urged that this negative trend be reversed, hope be nurtured and forces be joined to reform and revitalize governance processes in Nigeria.

The speech had a significant impact on the participants, creating awareness of the importance of constructive civic engagement. It charted a course towards a new era of accountability and action for Nigeria to fully realize its potential.
