Renewal and integrity: Me Matabishi Rashidi elected president of the union of legal defenders in Uvira

Fatshimetrie, October 26, 2024 – New hope has dawned for the judicial defenders of the Democratic Republic of Congo, as Me Matabishi Rashidi was elected president of the judicial defenders union in a historic election in Uvira, South Kivu province. In his inaugural speech, the new president pledged to restore the image of this essential profession and restore its nobility near the high court.

With an overwhelming majority of 49 votes out of 90 voters, Me Matabishi Rashidi clearly displayed his determination to meet the challenges and overcome the difficulties faced by the judicial defenders of Uvira. Among these obstacles, he pointed out the deplorable practice of unqualified people wearing the gown, a situation fueled by certain civil society organizations and so-called notables of mutual societies, who interfere in justice matters without having the legitimacy to do so.

The fight against this deception, orchestrated by unscrupulous individuals who tarnish the image of the profession of judicial defender, will be one of the priorities of the team led by Me Matabishi Rashidi. In addition to this problem, the challenges to be met include contribution difficulties, the absence of oaths, as well as the lack of contracts with partners who can financially support the union, in particular for the payment of office rent.

By replacing Me Valentin Hangi, the new president of the union of judicial defenders shows his determination to restore all its brilliance and legitimacy to this noble profession. His election marks the beginning of an era of renewal, integrity and excellence for the judicial defenders of Uvira and the entire DRC.

The vision of Me Matabishi Rashidi and his team brings renewed hope for a justice that is fairer, more transparent and more respectful of fundamental principles. By restoring the image of judicial defenders and combating harmful practices, they will help to strengthen public confidence in the justice system and promote values of integrity and respect for the law.
