The withdrawal of Jigawa State from a major legal dispute was recently announced by the State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice Bello Abdulkadir-Fanini at a press conference in Dutse on Saturday.
Abdulkadir-Fanini disclosed at the conference that Jigawa State had filed a notice of withdrawal from the litigation on October 24 with the Chief Registrar of the court.
“I wish to announce that Jigawa State has withdrawn from the litigation between the AG of Kogi State and the AG of the Federation (SC/CV/178/2023) pending before the Supreme Court.
“A notice of withdrawal, signed by my humble person, was filed in Abuja on 24th October, 2024, for notification to the Chief Registrar of the court, the respondent (the Attorney General of the Federation) and other states that are applicants in the matter,” Abdulkadir-Fanini said.
The Commissioner, without going into details as to why the state withdrew from the matter, simply explained that “the state went to court in the interest of Jigawa State and is withdrawing in its own interest.
“It may happen that you bring a case to court to achieve a certain goal, but then you find another way to achieve that goal and withdraw the case,” he added.
While there is little detail on the specific reasons for the withdrawal, it is clear that Jigawa State has made a strategic decision considering its best interests in this sensitive legal matter. This action could have significant implications for the litigation in question and for the legal relations between the various states involved.
It remains to be seen how Jigawa State’s decision to withdraw will affect the future course of this litigation and whether other legal or political actors will react to this announcement. The future of this exciting case is now more uncertain than ever, and keen observers will continue to monitor its developments closely.
