Fatshimetrie, October 25, 2024: The streets of Kinshasa, capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo, are invaded by pirate markets, to the great dismay of the city’s residents. This worrying situation calls on provincial and municipal authorities to act in accordance with the laws in force.
Florent Mualaba, president of the Kinshasa Association for a Better Tomorrow (AKLM), is sounding the alarm on the current state of the city’s main avenues, obstructed by these clandestine markets. Traffic is greatly disrupted, causing frequent traffic jams and even accidents due to the risky behavior of drivers.
The impact of these markets on the population is undeniable. Women, exposed to bad weather and the dangers inherent in these informal sales locations, are particularly vulnerable. Bokassa, Gambela, Université and many other streets seem to be taken over by these illegal activities, compromising the well-being of all.
While urban planners are trying to solve the problem of traffic jams that hinder the flow of traffic, the issue of pirate markets remains a crucial issue. Florent Mualaba calls on the competent authorities, whether provincial, municipal or police, to enforce the law and dismantle these illegal markets.
It is time for concrete measures to be taken to restore order and ensure the safety of all. State texts and works must be applied without compromise, in order to guarantee a safer and more fluid urban environment for the inhabitants of Kinshasa. The urgency of this situation requires immediate and effective action from the authorities to put an end to this anarchy that reigns in the streets of the Congolese capital.
Ultimately, cooperation between all stakeholders is essential to overcome this major challenge and restore public order on the streets of Kinshasa. It is everyone’s responsibility to contribute to the preservation of public space and the improvement of the quality of life of citizens.
