Historic meeting of the Higher Defense Council in Kisangani: Crucial issues for the future of the DRC

“The highly anticipated meeting of the Higher Defense Council, chaired by President Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi in Kisangani, sparked strong reactions and raised crucial issues for the future of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The main objective of this strategic meeting was to strengthen security throughout the national territory. The orientations and directives given by the Head of State highlighted the importance of national unity as a key element to counter any potential threat. A call for vigilance was also launched in order to preserve the tranquility and stability of the country in a context where peace remains an absolute priority.

The presence of Prime Minister Suminwa Judith and other senior officials demonstrates the government’s commitment to guaranteeing the security and well-being of the Congolese population. This meeting is particularly important in view of the first Council of Ministers of the Tshisekedi era, which will open today in Kisangani, promising new perspectives for development and governance of the country.

Alongside his security commitments, President Tshisekedi paid a vibrant tribute to the victims of the genocide, stressing the importance of collective memory and justice in overcoming the traumas of the past. His moving meeting with survivors and his symbolic gesture of financial support to the local Catholic Church reinforce his desire for reconciliation and reparation for historical injustices.

However, these initiatives have also sparked criticism and questions from the political opposition, notably Moïse Katumbi, who accuses President Tshisekedi of wanting to amend the constitution to stay in power. This protest raises heated debates on the limits of presidential power and the risks of authoritarian drifts, highlighting political tensions and democratic issues in the DRC.

Thus, the meeting of the Higher Council of Defense and President Tshisekedi’s actions in Kisangani raise essential questions about the future of the country, between security imperatives, duty of memory and democratic challenges. It is up to every Congolese to remain vigilant and to participate actively in building a strong, just and prosperous nation.”
