In a world plagued by many tensions and conflicts, African youth, often neglected, carry immense potential to build peace and stability in the region. It is with this in mind that young people from the member states of the East African Economic Community (EAC) gathered at a forum in Goma (North Kivu) to reflect on peace, security and peaceful coexistence.
Nathanael Atip, Vice President of the EAC National Youth Council, spoke to encourage young people to become ambassadors of peace in their respective countries. He stressed the importance of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2250, which recognizes the crucial role of young people in preserving and consolidating peace.
During these three days of reflection, participants were made aware of the importance of overcoming divisions and mistrust to promote living together. Nathanael Atip urged the youth to dissociate themselves from rebel movements, reject negative roles and work towards reconciliation.
Calling for unity and solidarity, Nathanael Atip invited the youth of the region to become actors of peace, build bridges where there are barriers and choose the path of cooperation rather than division. He also stressed the importance of regional cooperation in resolving conflicts and promoting sustainable development.
In conclusion, the call to become ambassadors of peace made at this forum is a reminder of the responsibility that falls on African youth. By embracing this role with determination and commitment, the youth of East Africa can effectively contribute to building a peaceful and prosperous future for the region.
