Heated debates in the National Assembly of the DRC: 2025 budget and state of siege at the heart of discussions

The National Assembly of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) was the scene of lively discussions during the recent plenary session chaired by Vital Kamerhe. At the heart of the debates was the issue of the composition of the 2025 budget, which raised a lively controversy with the alignment of 513 deputies instead of the usual 500.

The President of the Assembly clarified this situation, highlighting the presence of honorary presidents among the deputies. He also mentioned a previous dispute involving deputies invalidated by the Constitutional Court, forced to see their rights restored following a decision by the African Inter-Parliamentary Union. These elements therefore led to the increase in the number of deputies benefiting from the 2025 budget.

In addition, the plenary session also discussed the 84th extension of the state of siege in the provinces of North Kivu and Ituri. The deputies expressed their weariness with these repeated extensions, demanding a prior assessment before any new extension. They want the military governors to be present during this assessment, in order to obtain concrete information on the effectiveness of this security measure.

These discussions within the National Assembly highlight the political and security issues facing the DRC. The debates around the 2025 budget and the extension of the state of siege reflect the complexity of the challenges to be met to ensure the stability and development of the country.

Ultimately, it is essential that these discussions lead to informed and concerted decisions, in order to adequately respond to the needs and expectations of the Congolese population. The role of political institutions, such as the National Assembly, is essential to ensure transparent and effective governance, thus building a better future for all citizens of the DRC.
