Promoting hygiene in Kinshasa schools: an innovative project for the future

Kinshasa, 23 October 2024 (ACP) – A crucial agreement for the implementation of the innovative “Hygiene in School Environments” project was recently concluded during an official ceremony in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo. Under the aegis of the Asbl “Duc in Altum” and the Kintambo Communal Council, this ambitious initiative aims to promote high health standards in schools in the region.

The Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Asbl, Reverend Alexandre Kanangil Akongol, highlighted the four fundamental pillars of this project: raising awareness of the importance of hand hygiene, setting up washing stations, building or renovating toilets and sanitizing the school environment. This holistic approach aims to provide students with a healthy and safe environment for their education.

Student participation is at the heart of this initiative, encouraging them to become spokespersons for hygiene and promote these good practices within their community. The ultimate goal is to preserve health and improve the quality of life of individuals.

The Lukunga 2 Institute was the first institution to benefit from this project, well before the health crisis linked to the coronavirus. With the involvement of 100 schools in the commune of Kintambo, this large-scale program promises to have a significant impact on the health and well-being of students.

The signing ceremony was marked by the presence of the Kintambo Municipal Council, Serge Kayembe, the representative of the mayor Pierre Ntabi Mandiangu and the provincial deputy Justin Kadima Kabongo. Since its creation in 2017, the non-profit organization “Duc in Altum” has been involved in six areas of intervention, including education, health, culture, agriculture, environmental protection and financial inclusion.

In conclusion, the “Hygiene in School Environments” project represents a major step forward in promoting essential health standards in Congolese schools. By integrating students into this process, it promotes awareness and the adoption of hygienic practices, thus contributing to the preservation of public health and the well-being of the educational community.
