Fatshimetrie, October 18, 2024 – The global economy is constantly evolving, and it is imperative for each country to adapt to new trade trends to remain competitive on the international stage. It is with this in mind that the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) recently participated in a morning of tripartite discussions on the “Agoa” Program, aimed at strengthening its competitiveness in the field of exports.
During this event, Benezeth Msafiri Kyaka, Director of the Office of the Minister of Foreign Trade, stressed the importance for the DRC to redouble its efforts to fully exploit the opportunities offered by Agoa. This trade agreement with Africa, which guarantees access to the American market without customs duties or reciprocity obligations, is an essential lever for the country’s economic growth.
However, to take full advantage of Agoa, it is essential to implement a comprehensive strategy. This involves strengthening the competitiveness of Congolese companies, diversifying exported products towards high value-added goods, complying with international standards and improving logistics and infrastructure.
Mike Tambwe, Director General of the National Agency for Export Promotion (ANAPEX), stressed that one of the main problems encountered by Agoa beneficiary countries is the low use of the advantages offered by this preferential agreement. He called for the commitment of local actors to promote Congolese exports and improve the use of Agoa.
It is undeniable that the implementation of an effective strategy and collaboration between state bodies, the private sector and civil society are essential to ensure the success of Congolese exports to the American market. The designation of the DRC to host the next AGOA Forum in 2025 is a unique opportunity to highlight the country’s exportable offer and strengthen its position on the international scene.
In conclusion, the DRC’s participation in the “Agoa” Program offers promising prospects for the country’s economic development. By taking advantage of the opportunities offered by this trade agreement, the DRC can strengthen its export competitiveness and stimulate its growth in the years to come.
